Choosing the right photo for a pet portrait:
It can be tricky getting a good photo of your pet as they are often on the move. However, the better the photo, the easier it is to paint a good portrait. So here are some tips.

Natural light
Use natural daylight, outside or near a window to show your pet’s natural colours as accurately as possible. The clearer the eyes and fur colour & texture the better. The background is not important.

Enlist help
Enlist a friend or family member to help by getting them to hold a ball or treat near you so your pet is alert.

Variety of angles
Take photos from different angles. A good variety will help me to capture your pet’s unique personality!

Get low
Crouch down so your camera is level with your pet’s eyes to create a natural perspective.

Avoid flash
Avoid filters or flash. Do not crop the photo. It is ok to send full body photos even if I am just painting a head portrait.

Variety of angles
Send original images rather than screen shots so as much detail is preserved as can be.
Send multiple photos so that there is an option to get the best possible reference image. A variety of images makes it’s easier to select a photo where the eyes are clear and the lighting is natural.
There are circumstances that you might not be able to get good photos of your pet. For example, if your beloved pet has passed away and you are looking for a memorial portrait. If you are concerned that your photos might not meet requirements, please contact me as I can review them and see what I can do. There is often enough detail in multiple old photos for me to work from. I will always be honest about what is achievable.
